My love of Nature has been expressed in the abstracted imagery of my paintings.
In my pieces, I try to convey the color and movement of water, wind, and sky, as well as the realms of being that lie within us. One of my most important goals is to distill the feelings that being surrounded by natural beauty awakens in us.
Having been formally trained as a scientist, I found that being an artist poses somewhat different challenges: In science, you plan out every step of your research ahead of time. In contrast, making art often involves stepping out with each brushstroke into the unknown.
Painting in acrylics has opened a world of flexibility that had allowed me to make art, change it, expand it, and learn from it in a fraction of the time that my metalsmithing or glass fusing took. From my metalsmithing, I brought my love of strong design. From my glass fusing, I brought my love of light and of making sweeping gestural lines. Painting in acrylics has saturated my work with an explosion of color. It has allowed me to further explore depth, composition, balance, and movement and translate them into abstractions. I feel that painting in acrylics has provided the opportunity for me to grow exponentially as a professional artist.
I invite each viewer to find their own unique meaning in any of my paintings. I hope that those who experience my work receive some of the joy and delight and gratitude in being alive that I feel every day.
